Our school’s pedagogy reflects the overarching principles and approach to learning outlined in the Sydney Catholic Schools’ Statement on Authentic Learning. By connecting to the real world of students’ lives, authentic learning enables students to become lifelong learners who contribute to society and the wider world as active and discerning citizens. Authentic learning is central to our work as Catholic educators because it promotes the continual growth and wellbeing of the whole person — spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.

St Michael's Catholic Primary School Meadowbank Learning ApproachSt Michael’s Catholic Primary School Meadowbank is at the top of a hill. From the top of a hill you can see where you have been and where you would like to go. Sometimes climbing a hill is hard work, other times it is easy. It is like this with learning at St Michael’s, and this inspires the motto of our vision for teaching and learning:

‘From this hill we will soar’

The image of a child soaring from this hill like a kite is used to animate our approach to learning which is known as our KITES Pedagogy:

KNOWLEDGE: knowing how to soar takes great understanding

Knowledge is acquiring and using new skills and information developed from previous understandings which are of relevance to the learner.

At St Michael’s we:

  • Engage learners in challenging activities
  • Acknowledge learners have different learning styles and interests
  • Provide a skills-based, problem solving approach to learning

INNOVATION: you don’t know where the breeze will take you

Innovation is passionately engaging with learning to explore a variety of creative ways of making new meaning.

At St Michael’s we:

  • Collaborate to share and create new understandings
  • Promote an environment that develops self-directed learners
  • Provide opportunities for higher order thinking and the creative use of technology.

TAKING RISKS: by facing the wind we can soar to great heights

Taking risks is engaging in the learning process, knowing that new learnings arise from all experiences.

At St Michael’s we:

  • Encourage the active involvement in personal goal setting and decision making
  • Foster a safe learning environment
  • Enhance skills of thinking, reflecting and problem-solving.

EMPOWERMENT: soaring is easier when you take control of the wings

Empowerment is being proactive in the decision-making process to take ownership of learning.

At St Michael’s we:

  • Engage in negotiated learning experiences
  • Share our opinions and value those of others
  • Take responsibility for our learning.

SUCCESS: soar your kite to the highest height

Success is striving to reach full potential and soaring beyond previous accomplishments.

At St Michael’s we:

  • Maintain high expectations and celebrate achievements
  • Use enriching learning experiences to cater for the individual learning styles and needs of learners.
